| 2009 Jun 08 | New in Mashups“The frantic global rush to connect everyone to everyone, all the time, is quietly giving rise to a revised version of socialism… Nearly every day another startup proudly heralds a new way to harness community action. These developments suggest a steady move toward a sort of socialism uniquely tuned for a networked world…It is not anti-American; indeed, digital socialism may be the newest American innovation. While old-school socialism was an arm of the state, digital socialism is socialism without the state. This new brand of socialism currently operates in the realm of culture and economics, rather than government—for now.“Sharing, cooperation, collaboration, and collectivism – where will it all lead?Check out the article from Wired Magazine in Mashups | |

| 2009 May 25 | New in Mashups YouTube vbloggers – taking a ride on some else’s dime“Despite the growth of YouTube’s user base, there is little evidence to suggest Google has been able to materially monetize this usage,” Many people are used to the idea that many things on the Internet are “free”. It would be better to think of “free” in terms of “cost shifting”. People who upload their videos to YouTube do it “for free” but it does cost cost someone something ( a lot ) to store and distribute those videos when “everyman” clicks on a YouTube video link. So while vbloggers are blissfully uploading video’s and ranting on why (copyright) music is being taken out of their videos by the YouTube minders someone is paying the bill for all this. It’s kind of an interesting contrast. On one hand you have the blissful idealism of vbloggers engaged in the euphoria of social media and on the other hand you have the entrepreneur and business people racking thier brain on how to pay for all this. Read more about what it costs Google to support YouTube and ideas to make YouTube profitable… on our Mashups page |

| 2009 Mar 29 | New in Information Mashups – “To die — To sleep– To sleep– perhaps to dream. But that’s the rub: in the sleep of death, what dreams may come?” Shakespeare’s Hamlet applied to your PC – how much does it cost? The 2009 PC Energy Report reveals some staggering findings. In terms of savings alone, it’s possible to save over $2.8 billion in the US alone through turning off your PC while in the UK it’s nearer £300 million and €918 million in Germany. For example, if all the world’s 1 billion PC’s were powered down for just one night – it would save enough energy to light up New York City’s Empire State Building – inside and out – for more than 30 years If you run a company with 1,000 PCs left on overnight, you can save about $28,000 a year if they are turned off after hours. That’s not chump change. Read the full report in Mashups |
